Are books worth reading for oil painting hints and tips?

There are many books out there giving tips on oil painting, with varying degrees of usefulness. Personally, I would avoid the ones that teach colour mixing and techniques based purely on specific subject matter, for example "How to Paint Water" or "How to Paint Skies" as they may not give you the real foundations. If you thoroughly learn the basics then they will stand you in good stead to paint whatever you want, including water, skies, flowers, pets, etc.

There are gems scattered here and there throughout books, so they are certainly worth looking at for valuable tips, but you have to search. None of them however are a substitute for a good teacher or tutor...
